I’ve seen a good few metal back boxes that have two plastic lugs for securing faceplate so no Earth continuity between faceplate screws and back box - can’t assume metal . Yes, the metal faceplate needs to be earthed. It looks like that particular K/O box has nylon lugs, so it doens't *have* to be earthed, however as you have an earth bext to connect it. I usually drill and tap a hole in the back of the box (taped to M4 works well), crimp an eyelet crimp on the earth, clean the paint from round the hole and attach with suitable machine screw Looks like there is some degraded di-isoctyl .• Absence of a reliable earth connection to a recessed metallic back box of an insulated accessory, such as where there is no ‘earthing tail’ connecting the earthing terminal of the accessory to the box, and the box does not have a fixed lug that comes into contact with an earthed eyelet on the accessory if this is a plastered brick wall, it is more usual to chase out the brick and fit metal back-boxes. Put the cable CPC into the sockets, and link the socket to the back-box earth terminal with a 150mm piece of 2.5mm or larger G&Y. If you have not sunk into brickwork before, you use a club hammer and an electricians bolster. There’s two separate earths - the top and bottom. The top is for “back to the box” and the bottom is the “functional Earth”. As I say, in the video I watched, the guy put the two original earths in the top one, and then a separate third Earth cable in the bottom - I don’t have a third Earth so, just not 100% clear and I don’t wanna take chances lol

Just connect the earth wire from the twin & earth cable directly into the earth connector of the new metal switch, and forget about trying to earth the plastic back box. Plastic back boxes are insulators (not conductors), so don't need to be earthed. Don't forget to sleeve the earth wire with green or yellow/green sleeving. Can some one please confirm wether or not my metal faceplate needs to be earthed if the metal back box is already earthed thank you. I have attached a picture of the wiring below before fitting the metal faceplate. . or use a piece of 1mm2 cable from the earth terminal on the backbox to the earth terminal on the faceplate. Daftly enough, metal back-boxes DO have to have an earth to the socket earth. This is discussed in one of the IEE Guidance Notes where it was argued that the only exposed metalwork would be the screwheads once the socket front was fastened back. . Correct way is to loop in to the socket FIRST then a tail from the socket to the back box earth .

The metal back box is an exposed conductive part and must be earthed. Wether it is earthed through the screws/lugs or a piece of cable is up to the installer, personally for what it is worth I always put this link in. . Accessories which have an earthing terminal incorporated, such as socket-outlets, normally have an earth strap connecting . If there is no earth terminal on the switch there maybe a terminal on the metal box in the wall? Reply. N. niceguy235uk . I'm wiring in new bedroom lights : there is no earth tab in the light switch or plastic back box. Is it OK to just cut the earth wire off, or should I get a back box with an earth terminal and throw away all back boxes without earth terminals? I will eventually attempt to get it inspected and passed under Part P 17 or 17A3. thanks [george] Got a metal light switch to fit but surpisingly there's no earth terminal on the switch plate. It's Jo Jo branded and has BS3676 marked on it so presumably meets regs? The metal back box is earthed so the screws would presumably earth the front plate when fitted, but this doesn't seem ideal?

No specific need to earth the boxes unless they're being used as part of the earthing system, eg, metal conduit, swa etc. If the accessory has an earth terminal use that, otherwise put the earth conductors into a piece of connector block. If using metal accessories the back box will be sufficiently earthed by the accessory fixing screws.

Hi, I recently bought some converta (white plastic) sockets to convert my single plugs to doubles as easy as possible. The instructions clearly state that the earth terminal on the new socket should be connected to the metal wall box, if a metal one is present, as well as obviously being connected to the main earth wires that go into the walls. The incoming earth conductor/s should be sheathed in green / yellow sleeving and connected directly to the metal switch earth terminal. If the metal box has fixed lugs current regulations would be complied with as earthing to the box would be via the securing metal screws that fix the switch plate to box.The back box is plastic, so the wires are not doing anything in that, it's literally to stop them dangling loose, the screw goes nowhere.. For a metal faceplate just unscrew them from the plastic box and move them to the faceplate's earth terminal, you don't need any additional wires, and you don't need to use that existing connection on the back box. So my suggestion which I think Andy was trying to make earlier is why don't you connect the Live to the Live, the Neutral to the Neutral and the Earth to the Earth and stop worrying about the box since it's plastic and the only thing you aren't doing which you would do an a metal box is adding an additional earth lead running between the earth .
